Solution: The Hall Student Union is designed to provide a revamped student union and cafeteria for the Central Community College Hastings Campus, and provide a showcase space for the campus and enhance student life and activities. The project had several unique design challenges, the first in that it was remodeling and connecting two existing separate buildings, one being the original mess hall from 1942, the other a 1980s postmodern building. Separated by approximately 40 feet, WilkinsADP approached the design for the “link” to be clean and minimal so as not to compete with either of the original styles, but also act as a mediator when connecting the two separate structures. The link is composed mostly of limestone veneer, a common material found on campus, and a custom steel curtain wall that allows natural daylight and views throughout. Another challenge was developing a construction phasing schedule that allowed the college to continue operating a cafeteria for their students, and coordinating a complete replacement of existing utilities and combining onto a new horizontal geothermal loopfield system.
